February 1st, 2020

Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) has officially opened registrations throughout the state.

2020 is set to be another record year for football, as it remains the number one participation sport across the country.

66,400 players played throughout Northern NSW in 2019, a 1.5% increase for traditional winter football and an astonishing 4.19% increase in players in non-traditional football formats.

Within the Hunter individually, Newcastle Football experienced a 3.7% increase in Junior players (8-11-years) and Macquarie experienced 2.6% increase in 2019 where as Hunter Valley Football recorded a 4.4% increase in entry level players (4-7 -years).

NNSWF CEO, David Eland is looking forward to witnessing another successful season of football across the region in 2020.

“The popularity of our sport continues to grow each year, the increase of players is reflective of the accessibility of the game throughout all seasons, not just traditional winter, however other formats such as TAFE NSW Summer Football,” Eland said.

“The success of our Matildas has also contributed to an increase in female players, with record numbers of girls and women joining the game – fantastic news given the exposure we will receive in the lead up to Olympic qualifiers and our World Cup Bid.”

Eland added, strong commercial partnerships and collaboration between State Federations, Members Zones and Clubs is a key reason the sport has remained the number one participation sport across the country.

“Partnerships such as our major partner in Community Football, Newcastle Permanent Building Society, allow us to keep our fees to an absolute minimum which has seen NNSW again not increase registration fees.

“Local Member Zone Northern Inland Football, have also taken on board the financial challenges families face in their local regions and have also maintained their fees without any increase,” Eland concluded.

Major Partner in Community Football Newcastle Permanent’s CEO Bernadette Inglis highlighted the success and longevity of the partnership and the organisation’s commitment to grassroots, community football.

“This year marks 12 years partnering with Northern NSW Football. As the major Community Football partner across Northern NSW and more than 230 clubs, we are proud to support an organisation committed to promoting active and healthy lives,” Inglis said.

“Football is a sport inclusive of gender, age and ability—making it accessible to almost everyone and we look forward to supporting Northern NSW Football for another successful year.”
